Welcome to 2025: The Year of Going Unhinged

human flourishing human potential parenting for flourishing self directed learning the future of education Jan 22, 2025

Like everyone else, I’ve been thinking about the year ahead—what I want to change, focus on, and let go of. January always feels like an open invitation to re-evaluate life, shake things up, and step into something new.

And honestly, I feel like I’m always doing that. Constantly tweaking, reworking, and reinventing myself as I figure out what I want (or need) next. My work is no different because, at this point, my life and my work are one and the same.

So, what’s the vibe for this year?

A friend and I decided to name this new decade Unhinged.

And honestly? That feels exactly right. 2024 was just the warm-up.

What Does Unhinged Even Mean?

Technically, it means “mentally unbalanced and deranged” (lol). But for me, it’s about letting loose, leaning into discomfort, and reaching for the things that challenge me or make me nervous. It’s about breaking out of the mental constraints I’ve carried—whether they were placed on me or ones I unknowingly built myself.

This year, I want to shake things up—especially in how we think about life, parenting, and education.

I want to create more conversations that make us pause. To question the rules we’ve just accepted without even realizing it. To push against the narratives we’ve been fed about what’s “right” or “normal” and start asking: But is it actually true?

The Truth Is…

Somewhere along the way, I slipped into a bit of people-pleasing. Deep down, I know I’m a rebel, but life is busy, and sometimes the path of least resistance is just easier.

That said—if you ask most people around me, they’d probably laugh at the idea of me being “conventional.”

Still, I know I’ve softened my edges in ways I didn’t intend to. I’ve made things palatable when they didn’t need to be. And I think I did that out of compassion—because I get how hard it is to challenge your thinking, to unlearn, to rethink what you thought was solid ground. I understand that people crave acceptance, understanding, and belonging.

But at the same time…

Sometimes, we need to be shaken up.

We need something to rattle us to the core, to challenge us in a way that doesn’t just make us think differently but makes us live differently.

Because that’s where real transformation happens.

So that’s what I’m stepping into this year.

What Does That Mean for You?

If you’re here, reading this, it probably means you’re someone who questions things too. Someone who doesn’t just take the world at face value. Someone who wants to raise kids who aren’t just well-behaved but alive—who think for themselves, who understand themselves, who feel free to be fully them.

That means you’re probably ready for some honest, no-BS conversations.

And I’m here for it.

Two Powerful Tools for Reflection

If you’re feeling the pull to dig into your own beliefs, values, and direction for the year ahead, here are two things I love to do—not just in January, but whenever I need a reset:

21-Day “This is My Life” Challenge – A free, guided reflection to help you explore your values, beliefs, and self-awareness. It’s a short daily activity, and you can join here.

Yearly ReflectionThis is one of my favourite exercises. It always hits deep, and I revisit it throughout the year when life throws curveballs.

If you’re looking for clarity and self-reflection, check them out.

Let’s Build This Together

I don’t want to just talk at you—I want to create a space where we can challenge ideas, dig deeper, and have the conversations that actually matter.

If you’re ready to shake things up, join the community where we can keep this conversation going. A space for rebels, unconventional thinkers, and those who believe there’s a better way to live, parent, and learn.

And if this post made you think of someone—a friend who’s questioning things, a parent who’s ready for a new approach—send this their way. Let’s grow this movement together.

This is the year we stop tiptoeing and start talking. Let’s go.
